The replacement isn't a casual swap
The bet, in this case, is a restaurant currently going by the working name Northgrille Bar, which co-owner Glenn Kaplan has said could still change before it opens. Kaplan and his partner Mike Richardson also own Benstein Grille, a 200-seat restaurant they opened in Charter Township in 2015 after both spent time managing Brio Tuscan Grille locations. The menu they're planning for the old Border Cantina space skews upscale for the corridor: steaks, fish, pasta, and a full bar built around bourbon, tequila, and wine rather than the frozen margaritas Border Cantina was known for.
That's not a like-for-like replacement. It's a step up in both price point and format, in the same building, on the same block, from operators who already know how to run a full-service dining room in this market.
Quick service is filling in around it
At the same time, two national and regional chains are staking out ground just up the road. Raising Cane's opened its new Novi location at 26245 Novi Road on August 3, and the opening came with a hiring push for 130 positions, a real signal about how much volume the company expects to move through that building. A few blocks away at 26127 Novi Road, The Peach Cobbler Factory is bringing a new location to the corridor, joining existing Michigan spots in Detroit and Canton with another planned for Ann Arbor.
